Stephen Hawking Quotes on Life and Science

Stephen Hawking Quotes

Professor Stephen Hawking quotes on the Universe and life in reference to the Universe makes his work profoundly influential.  Here is my collection of Stephen Hawking’s best quotes:-

Stephen Hawking quote on Laws of Science

“I believe the universe is governed by the laws of science. The laws may have been decreed by God, but God does not intervene to break the laws.”

Hawking quote on Imperfections

“One of the basic rules of the Universe is that nothing is perfect. Perfection simply doesn’t exist. Without imperfection, neither you, nor I would exist.

Stephen Hawking quote on life

  • “look up at the Stars, and not down at your feet”
  • “Never give up work. Work gives you meaning. and life is empty without it
  • “If you are lucky enough to find love, remember it is there and don’t throw it away”
  • “However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at”

Professor Stephen Hawking quote on Aliens

“If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans.”

Stephen Hawking quote on the creation of Universe

“Science predicts that many different kinds of universe will be spontaneously created out of nothing. It is a matter of chance which we are in.”

Stephen Hawking quote on God (Divine)

“The whole history of science has been the gradual realization that events do not happen in an arbitrary manner, but that they reflect a certain underlying order, which may or may not be divinely inspired.”

“There is no God. No one created the universe and no one directs our fate

Professor Hawking quote on Intelligence

“It is not clear that intelligence has any long-term survival value.”

Quote on IQ

“People who boast of their high IQs are losers”

Professor Hawking Quote on CERN Higgs Boson

Stephen Hawking, on he discovery of Higgs Boson “God” Particle, warned that the scientists could destroy the Universe and “we wouldn’t see it coming”

Hawking quote on Space Travel

“It will be difficult enough to avoid disaster in the next hundred years, let alone the next thousand or million…Our only chance of long-term survival is not to remain inward-looking on planet Earth, but to spread out into space.”

Hawking quote on Time Travel

“Time travel used to be thought of as just science fiction, but Einstein’s general theory of relativity allows for the possibility that we could warp space-time so much that you could go off in a rocket and return before you set out”

Stephen Hawking quote on Artificial Intelligence (AI)

“Artificial Intelligence would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever-increasing rate. Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn’t compete, and would be superseded.”

Hawking Quote on Creation of the Universe

“Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing,

Hawking quote on Afterlife

“I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail…There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.”

Professor Hawking quote on Darwin’s theory of Evolution

“Not to take this web of dualities as a sign we are on the right track, would be a bit like believing God put fossils into rocks in order to mislead Darwin about evolution of life”

Stephen Hawking major Discoveries

Professor Hawking Six major discoveries that hugely impact Physics are :-

Our universe will collapse back

First, along with Dr. Penrose, Hawking showed that a collapsing Universe like ours will collapse back to a single point eventually. This is quite interesting knowing that our universe is also thought to have originated in one instance (Big Bang).

It’s the Theory of Relativity that implies this fate of our universe that it started with a big bang and will end in black holes.

Documenting Black Holes Laws

Secondly, he documented Black hole mechanics by saying that black holes have their own set of laws that mirror the more familiar laws of thermodynamics. His conclusion was that black holes were hot, and that information vanishes when some heavenly body falls into the black hole.

On the other hand, radiation does escape out of a black hole’s enormous gravitational pull.

Vanishing Black holes that are actually Red Hot

Thirdly, he proved how black holes can vanish by combining quantum and relativity theory. He showed why black holes were not black, instead were glowing like hot bodies. As they emit heat and would eventually vanish by emitting too much.

Near the end of their lives, black holes release heat at a spectacular rate i.e. in the last tenth of a second, a black hole could explode with the energy of a million one-megaton hydrogen bombs.

Explanation of the Expanding Universe

Fourth, he visualized how galaxies expanded exponentially after the Big Bang. By using the quantum fluctuations concept and the effect of gravity to form heavenly bodies he explained the sequence of events after the bang.

Recent mapping of the expanding heavens has also picked up the faint afterglow of the big bang.

Wave theory of Universe

Fifth, while attempting to form a quantum explanation of the universe coming into existence, he proposed the Wave function of the universe. That, in theory, could be used to calculate the properties of the universe we see around us.

Universal laws at the start of the Universe

Sixth, the unified theory explains the conditions that were present at the beginning of the universe as well as the features of the physical laws of nature. When humans develop the unified field theory, said Hawking, they will “know the mind of the divine”
