Rock Climbing in Islamabad: A Beginner’s Experience
Rock climbing in Islamabad offers an unusual way to experience the rocky landscape around the Margalla Hills. After completing several hiking trails, I wanted to try a more technical outdoor activity and joined an organised climbing session near Shahdara.
I was a complete beginner, so the group provided the ropes, harness and basic instruction. The experience was physically demanding, enjoyable and very different from ordinary hiking.
This guide describes my first climb, the equipment used and the precautions beginners should take. Climbing locations, operators, access rules and route conditions can change, so verify everything before booking.

Rock Climbing Mountains in Pakistan
Islamabad has several natural rock faces used by climbing groups, particularly around the Margalla Hills and Shahdara area. Routes differ considerably in height, technical difficulty, rock condition and protection.
Beginners should not select a route based only on photographs or an online difficulty grade. A competent climbing instructor should match the route to the participant’s experience and inspect the anchors, ropes and protection before climbing.
Rock climbing is not the same as hiking. It requires technical equipment, a trained belayer and a clear understanding of climbing commands.
Choosing a climbing instructor
Beginners should book through an established climbing club or instructor with verifiable experience. Before paying, ask:
- Who will supervise the climb?
- Is the instructor trained in belaying and rescue procedures?
- When were the ropes, harnesses and helmets last inspected?
- Will every participant wear a helmet?
- Is the route suitable for a first-time climber?
- What is the emergency and evacuation plan?
- Will climbing be cancelled after rain or during unsafe weather?
Do not depend on an old telephone number from a blog post. Confirm the operator’s current identity, qualifications and equipment directly.

How to get to Rock Climbing sites

My Rock Climb at Shahdara, Bara Kahu
I joined an organised climbing session near Shahdara on a rock face approximately 60 feet high. The instructors prepared the ropes and harnesses before explaining the basic climbing and belaying procedure.
As a beginner, I managed to climb roughly three-quarters of the route before descending on the rope. I found the combination of balance, grip strength and route-finding far more demanding than it appeared from below.
Other participants were supportive, and watching more experienced climbers helped me understand how technique can matter more than raw strength. Although I did not complete the route, the unsuccessful attempts were part of what made the experience memorable.
What is the best thing about Rock Climbing in Pakistan?
The best thing about Rock climbing in Islamabad on the weekends is just that, the great people you meet and then you get to exercise your potbelly too.
Essential climbing equipment
An organised beginner session should normally provide:
- A climbing helmet
- A correctly fitted harness
- A suitable dynamic climbing rope
- Locking carabiners
- A belay device
- Slings or quickdraws appropriate to the route
- Climbing shoes
- Chalk, if needed
Equipment should be selected and checked by an experienced climber. Do not buy life-safety equipment merely because it is inexpensive, and never use a damaged rope, harness, helmet or carabiner.
Beginners do not need to purchase a complete climbing kit before their first supervised session.
Is rock climbing in Islamabad safe?
No form of outdoor rock climbing is completely free from risk. Falls, loose rock, equipment failure, incorrect belaying, heat, sudden weather changes and poor route selection can all cause serious injury.
Risk can be reduced by climbing with a competent instructor, using properly certified and inspected equipment, wearing a helmet and following established belay procedures. International climbing bodies such as the UIAA publish technical safety standards for climbing equipment. theuiaa.org
Beginners should never climb an outdoor route alone, use abandoned equipment or assume that existing bolts and anchors are safe merely because they are already installed.
If you prefer a non-technical mountain activity first, try Trail 1 in the Margalla Hills. It provides a demanding hike without requiring ropes or belaying equipment.
Another Islamabad adventure that does not require climbing technique is horse riding in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, although club access and prices should be confirmed directly.

Conclusion
My first rock-climbing session in Islamabad was difficult, humbling and genuinely enjoyable. I did not complete the route, but I learned that climbing depends on technique, concentration, trust and correctly used equipment.
For beginners, the most important decision is not which rock face to climb—it is choosing a competent instructor who treats safety seriously. Start with a supervised introductory session and progress gradually rather than attempting an outdoor route independently.
